Getting Started
SnapGPT is a powerful browser extension that provides instant, AI-powered answers to academic questions. Whether you're studying for an exam, working on homework, or trying to understand a complex topic, SnapGPT can help you find solutions quickly and efficiently.

SnapGPT works on any website and leverages cutting-edge AI models including GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1-Mini, and Claude 3.7 Sonnet, with plans to integrate advanced reasoning models like Claude Thinking, OpenAI o3, and o4-mini in the future.
Installation
SnapGPT is available for both Firefox and Chrome. Follow these steps to get started:
Firefox Installation
- Visit the front page of our website, or click the "Download" button in the top right
- Click "Add to Firefox" to begin the installation
- When prompted, click "Add" to confirm the installation
- After installation, you'll see the SnapGPT icon in your browser toolbar
- Click on the icon to open the settings panel and sign in or create an account
Chrome Installation
- Visit the front page of our website, or click the "Download" button in the top right
- Click "Add to Chrome" to begin the installation
- When prompted, click "Add Extension" to confirm the installation
- After installation, you'll see the SnapGPT icon in your browser toolbar
- Click on the icon to open the settings panel and sign in or create an account
Account Setup
- Click the SnapGPT icon in your browser toolbar
- Click "Sign Up" if you're a new user, or "Sign In" if you already have an account
- Enter your email address and create a strong password
- Verify your email address by clicking the link in the confirmation email
- Return to the extension and sign in with your credentials
After installation and account setup, you're ready to start using SnapGPT. The screenshot button will appear at the bottom left of your browser window on all websites.
Basic Usage
SnapGPT can analyze questions and provide answers in multiple ways:
Full Page ScreenSnap
- Navigate to a webpage with an academic question
- Click the SnapGPT camera button in the bottom left corner of your browser
- Wait a moment while SnapGPT analyzes the content
- The answer will appear as a popup at your selected screen position
Selection ScreenSnap
- Hold Shift and click the SnapGPT camera button, or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + X
- Draw a selection box around the specific question you want to analyze
- Click the camera button that appears near your selection
- Wait for the analysis and view your answer
Text Selection
- Select text containing an academic question
- Right-click and choose "Analyze with SnapGPT" from the context menu
- View the answer in the popup
Tips for Best Results
- Ensure the question and all answer choices are clearly visible in your selection
- For multiple choice questions, make sure all options (A, B, C, D, etc.) are included
- If a question references an image, make sure to include the image in your selection
- Use the Selection ScreenSnap for more precise results on busy pages
Advanced Features
Stealth Mode
Stealth Mode provides a discreet way to use SnapGPT without drawing attention to the extension:
- Subtle Mode: Enable this in the Appearance tab of settings to make the interface more discreet
- Transparent Button: Makes the camera button invisible until hovered over
- Transparent Results: Shows answers with a transparent background
- URL Bar Answers: Displays answers in the browser's URL bar instead of in a popup
Explanation Feature
For complex questions, you can get a detailed explanation of the answer:
- After receiving an answer, open the SnapGPT popup menu
- Go to the "Advanced" tab
- Click "Explain Last Question"
- A new window will open with a detailed explanation of the solution
AI Model Selection
SnapGPT allows you to choose between different AI models:
- Claude 3.7 Sonnet: Most capable model, excellent for complex questions
- GPT-4.1: High-performance model with strong reasoning abilities
- GPT-4.1-Mini: Fastest model, ideal for simple questions when speed is a priority
Model Presets
For convenience, SnapGPT offers two preset configurations:
- Smart & Accurate: Uses Claude 3.7 Sonnet with Enhanced Understanding enabled
- Fast & Simple: Uses GPT-4.1-Mini with Enhanced Understanding disabled
These presets can be accessed in the "Advanced" tab of the settings panel.
SAQ (Short Answer Question) Mode
SAQ is a beta feature that allows you to select text on a webpage and get an AI-generated response directly. This feature is only available to a select number of testing users, so it is likely that you will not have access to it just yet. We are working to slowly roll this out to everyone.
Overview
- SAQ Mode provides instant answers to questions, code problems, or other content you select
- Responses can be quickly inserted into text fields with keyboard shortcuts
- Beta feature requiring specific user access
Enabling SAQ Mode
- Open SnapGPT extension popup
- Toggle "SAQ Mode" to ON (only visible for beta users)
- Optional: Enable "Subtle SAQ Mode" for less intrusive notifications
Using SAQ Mode
Context Menu Method:
- Select text on any webpage
- Right-click and select "Analyze SAQ" from the context menu
- Wait for response (loading indicator will appear)
Response Handling:
- Responses appear as popup notifications
- In normal mode: Shows "Response Ready" notification
- In subtle mode: Shows minimal indicator in URL bar and page title
Inserting Responses:
- Press Tab key to insert response chunks into text fields
- Response is divided into smaller chunks for easier insertion
- Continue pressing Tab to insert subsequent chunks
SAQ Keyboard Shortcuts
- Tab: Insert next chunk of SAQ response
- \: Alternative key to insert next chunk
Requirements and Limitations
- Must be a beta user (contact support for access)
- Must have SAQ Mode enabled in settings
- User must be logged in
- If SAQ Mode is disabled, a "Please Enable SAQ Completions" message appears
- Non-beta users will see a "Beta feature - Contact support for access" message
- Performance depends on the selected AI model in settings

Enhanced Understanding
When enabled, Enhanced Understanding provides more thorough analysis and detailed explanations along with answers. This mode uses more of your quota but delivers higher quality results, especially for complex questions.
Settings & Customization
SnapGPT offers extensive customization options through its settings panel. To access settings, click the SnapGPT icon in your browser toolbar.
General Tab
- Enable SnapGPT: Toggle the extension on/off
- Shift Click Snap: Enable/disable the selection mode when holding Shift
- Response Display Time: Set how long answers remain visible (0.1-60 seconds)
Appearance Tab
- Subtle Mode: Enable discreet interface
- Transparent Button: Make the camera button invisible until hover
- Transparent Results: Show results with transparent background
- Answer in URL Bar: Display answers in the URL bar instead of a popup
- Button Size: Adjust the size of the camera button (40-80px)
- Answer Popup Position: Choose where answers appear on screen
Advanced Tab
- Model Presets: Quick configuration for different use cases
- Enhanced Understanding: Toggle detailed analysis mode
- AI Model: Select which AI model to use
- Explain Last Question: Get detailed explanation for your last query
- Reset Settings: Return all settings to default values
User Profile & Quota
Click the profile icon in the top-right of the settings panel to:
- View your email and verification status
- Check your remaining daily quota (Free and Premium)
- Change your password
- Sign out of your account
Keyboard Shortcuts
SnapGPT offers keyboard shortcuts to streamline your workflow:
Global Shortcuts
- Alt + Shift + X: Take a full page screenshot and analyze
- Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + X: Activate selection mode for targeted screenshots
Selection Mode Controls
- Esc: Cancel selection mode
- Enter: Confirm selection (after drawing selection box)
- Hold Shift while clicking camera button: Activate selection mode
SAQ Mode Shortcuts
When using the SAQ (Short Answer Question) beta feature:
- Tab: Insert next chunk of SAQ response into text field
- \: Alternative key to insert next chunk
Note: SAQ Mode is a beta feature. See the Advanced Features section for details.
These shortcuts work on any webpage where SnapGPT is enabled.
Troubleshooting
Common Issues and Solutions
The SnapGPT Button Doesn't Appear
- Check if the extension is enabled in your browser's extension settings
- Open the SnapGPT settings and ensure "Enable SnapGPT" is toggled on
- Try refreshing the page
- Make sure you're signed in to your SnapGPT account
SnapGPT Doesn't Correctly Identify Answers
- Use selection mode to precisely target just the question and answer choices
- Make sure the question and all answer options are clearly visible
- Try using a more powerful AI model (Claude 3.7 Sonnet or GPT-4.1)
- Enable Enhanced Understanding in the Advanced settings
Error Messages or Quotas
- "Premium Quota Empty" - Switch to GPT-4.1-Mini or wait for daily quota reset
- "Please sign in" - Make sure you're logged in to your SnapGPT account
- "No question detected" - Make sure the screenshot includes a clear question
- "Network error" - Check your internet connection
Email Verification
If you haven't received a verification email:
- Check your spam/junk folder
- Try clicking "Resend Verification Email" in the extension popup
- Make sure you entered your email address correctly during signup

Privacy & Security
At SnapGPT, we take your privacy seriously. Here's how we handle your data:
Data Collection
- Screenshots & Questions: When you use SnapGPT, your questions (in text or image form) are sent to our servers for processing and then to the selected AI model.
- Account Information: We store your email address and encrypted password for authentication purposes.
- Usage Statistics: We track basic usage data to improve our service, including which AI models are used and how often.
Data Protection
- All data transmitted between your browser and our servers is encrypted using HTTPS.
- We do not store your screenshots or questions longer than necessary to process your request.
- Your personal information is never sold to third parties.
Educational Use Guidelines
SnapGPT is designed as a learning tool to help you understand complex problems. When using SnapGPT:
